Suspect who ran over Sheriff’s deputy charged with attempted murder
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced Wednesday, July 6, that the suspect who ran over a Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy has been charged with Attempted First Degree Murder and Felon in Possession of a Handgun.
TBI was called by Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich to investigate the case.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting around 9 p.m. Monday, July 4, in 9200 block of Durhamshire Drive in Cordova. One of the deputies attempted to talk to the driver, identified as Charlie L. Gibson II, 23, who then struck him with the front bumper, causing him to be carried away on the hood of the vehicle.
He and another deputy fired their service weapons into the vehicle, injuring Gibson.
The deputy who was run over was transported to Baptist Hospital East in non-critical condition. He has been treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.
Gibson was transported to Regional One Health in critical condition. He remains hospitalized due to his injuries.
Arrest warrants were secured Wednesday.
When he is discharged from the hospital, Gibson will be booked into the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar Ave. on a $250,000 bond.
