$10 Deal: The name might miss by a mile, but Inches’ tacos are on target

When I heard there was a new Mexican restaurant in Harbor Town named Inches Taco Shop & Bar, my first thought was “Inches?”
I met a friend for lunch there recently and found out that Inches offers a nice $10 Deal, noon to 4 p.m., on weekdays.
You can order two tacos, which come with a bag of fresh house-made chips and a drink, or a salad topped with grilled chicken and Caesar or cilantro-lime dressing, also with a drink.
That’s a non-alcoholic one, natch, although there’s a full bar and during lunch you can buy one Inch-a-Rita, which is the house margarita, and get another half off. The bar has a nice selection of tequila and seems like a place that makes a mean margarita, but we weren’t there to drink.
But we were there for the freakin’ tacos, and that slang is as close as I’m going to get to telling you how the owners came up with the restaurant’s name.
“Inches” doesn’t mean the F-word in Spanish but take off the S at the end and add the letter P in front. Then that’s what it means. Our server told us it’s commonly used slang in Guanajuata, Mexico, home of the owners, and they wanted something authentic.
So there you have it. They had to know people would ask, right?
Anyway and whatever. There are four tacos at the restaurant: Steak, pork, chicken and the veggie, which appears to be vegan, made with cauliflower, sweet potato, black beans and “guac sauce,” topped with a chipotle cashew drizzle.
All are served on blue corn tortillas folded in a taco rack, generously filled. The pork, topped with grilled pineapple, was our favorite, but the chicken, with crema and cotija cheese, and the steak, with cotija cheese and guac sauce were almost as good. Don’t confuse the green guac sauce with another, often fiery sauce you see in other restaurants; this is flavorful and creamy yet mild.
All are served with a choice of red or green salsa and a small bag of excellent chips.

But as we were there and I was working anyway, we ordered the cheese dip, guacamole and a sprightly mango salsa that’s had me dicing mangos at home a few times since I ate there. It was simple: mango, tomato, peppers, cilantro, maybe a little onion? (I’ve been adding a little green onion at home and it works.)
The cheese dip was good — creamy and cheesy with just a bit of heat, understated but in a good way. And while I prefer guacamole a little chunkier, the flavor at Inches was good.
The long narrow room has windows in the front and back (where there’s also a patio), but the restaurant keeps a cozy-nook feeling about it, as if it’s a place to share secrets. The wood walls and sombrero light fixtures keep things pleasantly muted, and it holds the promise of a nice place for a cocktail.
As for the regular menu prices…well, they seemed a little high, but after eating the food I’m hesitant to say they are.
A dinner bargain seems to be the flight of tacos, all four, plus an order of black beans and rice, for $19.95. If the portions are in line with lunch, that’s a meal for two. At the very least, I’ll withhold judgment until I have dinner there. Two tacos might not sound like much, but these get an A+ on quality and quantity, so the same for value. I’m eager to try more.
Inches Taco Shop & Bar, 111 Harbor Town Square, is open Tuesday through Thursday, noon-8:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, noon-9 p.m.; and 2-8 p.m. on Sunday. The lunch special is noon- 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Call 901-457-5463.
