The voters have spoken. And they have chosen Stevelen Morris and TaShawn Hubbard as The Daily Memphian’s boys and girls basketball players of the week.

Morris, from White Station, won nearly 47% of this week’s vote to defeat Brandon Nicholson of MUS. Morris has battled back from a long spell on the sidelines due to injury and he played a key role in his team’s victory over Houston on Nov. 28, scoring 21 of his 27 points after halftime in a 78-73 double-overtime victory.

He followed that with a 13-point effort as the Spartans downed Arlington, 43-32, on Dec. 1.

Hubbard garnered 42.2% of the girls vote following a good, all-around performance against rival Ridgeway on Dec. 1. She finished with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Jaguars won, 41-38.

St. Benedict’s Gracie Lamey took second with 28.7% after averaging 19.5 points in victories over Cordova and MASE. Aaliyah Converse of St. George’s was third, followed by Trezevant’s Shelby Gray and Allison Irby of Lewisburg.

A new round of voting begins on Monday.
