Germantown began working on strengthening its ordinances around businesses in residential areas last week, hoping to curb large gatherings in the neighborhoods.
The Planning Commission unanimously supported ordinance amendments last Tuesday. The proposal still requires three reviews by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen before it’s added to the city’s code. The changes come after large pay parties at residences — two this year on Forest Hill-Irene and one last year in the Oakleigh neighborhood.
The proposed ordinance prohibits events where a price or donation is required for admission. However, the ordinance said political, religious, public school support organizations, civic and political fundraisers are permitted in residential areas. It also allows events promoting ownership of newly built homes — events like the Vesta Home Show or St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway.
