Injured Memphis football player released from hospital
Memphis linebacker Karmelo Overton, injured in Friday’s game, was released from the hospital and back with the team on Sunday, Nov. 10.
Overton suffered a spinal injury Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said during his weekly press conference on Monday. Silverfield added that Overton will undergo additional tests.
“(He) will continue to undergo further tests,” Silverfield said. “At that time, it’s up to the medical people to decide. And like with everything, that’s between him and those people.
“It was great to see him up here. I was able to spend some time with him. He had a smile on his face and (was) in good spirits. We’ll continue to think about him and (are) hopeful for a great recovery.”
Overton collapsed on the field during the second quarter of a 27-20 win against Rice on Friday, Nov. 8. He collided with two Rice players during a kickoff. He started walking toward the sideline and after taking a few steps fell to the turf. Overton, a redshirt freshman, was carted off the field and taken to the hospital.
Silverfield said immediately after the game that Overton was able to talk and communicate before leaving the field, but there was no further update until Silverfield informed reporters on Monday.
“Just the fact that he’s out of the hospital and was able to be around his brothers was huge,” Silverfield said.
