As the shot that seemed to hang in the air for an endless amount of time rattled into the hoop and brought thousands in attendance at FedExForum on their feet, it was clear PJ Haggerty’s star had just grown a bit bigger.
Memphis’ 6-foot-3 guard backpedaled while pointing to his right forearm, suggesting he had ice water in his veins, as his 3-pointer from nearly half court gave the No. 19 Tigers a six-point lead over North Texas with a little more than two minutes left earlier this month.
The shot allowed the Tigers to hang on for a 68-64 win and instantly became one of the defining moments of a season for Haggerty so far that’s seen him emerge as an All-American candidate and dark-horse National Player of the Year contender.
But now, a play of that magnitude could also directly help Haggerty earn a few extra dollars.
