For this first time in 35 years, there will be a different head coach of the CBHS basketball team next season.

The name, however, will remain the same.

On Thursday, the school officially announced what had long been known. Brad Luckett will succeed his father, Bubba, as the Brothers’ coach. Bubba Luckett announced his retirement during this past season, which capped a career that saw him win more than 700 games.

“The Luckett name is synonymous with CBHS basketball, excellence, integrity and development of young men as Brothers for life,” Brother David Poos, the school’s president, said in a statement.

CBHS basketball has been central to my life for as long as I can remember.

“Brad’s personal journey from player to assistant coach to now head coach embodies our school’s mission of producing graduates who are competent, caring and creative young men. We are confident that the program remains in excellent hands as we begin this new chapter.”

Brad Luckett graduated from CBHS in 2008 and has been his father’s second-in-command for the past 13 seasons, including the 2022 campaign that saw the Brothers finish 28-0 and win the Division 2-AA state championship.

“CBHS basketball has been central to my life for as long as I can remember,” he said. “What I get to do for a living is special. Where I get to do it is special. Who I get to do it with is special.

“I won’t be taking this opportunity for granted. My father taught me that the process — not just the outcome — is what truly matters the most. I’m honored to continue (his father’s) legacy while building my own.”

Bubba Luckett is battling pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive disease that thickens and stiffens the lung tissue. He spent seven seasons as an assistant before taking over as head coach and coached his final game on March 1, when the Brothers lost, 44-35, to eventual champion Knoxville Webb in the state quarterfinals.
