Houston High needs upgrades. Germantown may change its own rules to make it happen.

A Germantown Financial Advisory Commission subcommittee met this week to discuss how it may adjust the city’s financial policies to fund Houston High’s renovations.

The subcommittee is composed of some members of the finance commission. Additional members include Alderwoman Sherrie Hicks, Andy Ellis, a school board member, and Tyson Nease, a Houston High alumnus and parent of students at the Germantown Municipal School District’s lone high school.

The finance commission’s main initiative is reviewing the annual budget and making recommendations before formal adoption by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. Now the commission is looking at the suburb’s financial policies in light of needed upgrades to the high school, which has seen few improvements to its academic spaces since Shelby County opened the school in 1989.
