New Eats: Puck Food Hall

Puck Food Hall seems to be the real deal this time around, and tell me, what’s not to like about a place where you walk in and find ice cream and a bakery on your left and a bar to your right? Nothing.
Quick recap, and you can click on the link a bit further down for more information: 409 South Main Food Hall opened a couple of years ago, but didn’t really take off for various reasons.
The good news is that the name change is more than a rebranding; the hall is spiffed-up and full of new vendors, and the vibe is urban and relaxed – it’s a comfortable place to eat, drink, check email or just hang out and visit. You’ll notice your fingers and toes tapping to the mostly Memphis soundtrack, and you’ll end up in a conversation with half the people there; it’s that kind of place.
City Block Salumeria, Brad McCarley’s butcher and sandwich counter, is still there, as is Daniel Master’s Bar 409, which was previously named Civil Pour. Everything else is new, opened within the last couple of months or more recently – as in Thursday, when the space officially opened as Puck Food Hall.
We headed down for lunch and sampled from City Block, Venga, Wok’n in Memphis and saved room for dessert from Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co. and Dee’lightful Bliss Bakery.
At City Block, my colleague Chris Herrington and I tried The Spicy Italian, a baguette with capicola, ham, 'nduja and mortadella, all made in-house, dressed with provolone, pepperoncini peppers, marinated onion and lettuce. At $12, it’s roughly $1 an inch for this overstuffed beast, a sandwich that can easily feed two. And because the meat is cured at City Block, it doesn’t taste like any other sandwich in town. The chunky and slightly tangy potato salad was nice, too.
On the list for my next visit? A muffaletta and a Reuben for sure.
At Wok’n in Memphis, we went with General Tso’s not just because we like it (admit it, so do you), but because it looked sooo good when other people ordered it.
With a side of Chinese broccoli in yuzu-chili vinegar topped with fried garlic and sliced radishes to mitigate the deep-fried damage, we dug in. It was a fairly sophisticated version of the generally hot and sweet standard, neither very sweet nor spicy but instead savory and distinctly fruity from the addition of orange juice. The broccoli was mildly spicy, a bit tangy and delicious; it’s one of my favorite vegetables. Next time? Ma La Pork belly with a smashed cucumber salad for sure.
At Venga, we went with a cheesy taco called a vampiro. It’s a standard street taco but with a layer of cheese between the two corn tortillas, and our thought was more cheese equals why not; we were right. But the green chile tamale trumped it, and even came out ahead of the molotes, a Mexican take on Italian arancini. Instead of rice, molotes are balls of masa encasing a meat filling (pork in mole when we tried them). They were excellent, but that was one good tamale. Next up: Posole for me.
Red velvet cookies, chocolate turtle and a wedding cake cupcake are among the sweets at Dee'lightful Bliss Bakery. Delta Butter Pecan gelato is one of the current selections at Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co. (Jennifer Biggs/Daily Memphian)
At Dee’lightful Bliss Bakery, we managed a few bites of a pretty and large wedding cake cupcake, a piece of turtle candy and a red velvet cookie; we resisted the call of the cheesecake balls because well, Sweet Magnolia. It was our final stop and we went with a single scoop of one of my favorite flavors, Delta Butter Pecan. And while everything else was sampled, because that’s a lot of food, we managed to polish off every bit of the gelato.
Each booth will control its own hours, but Puck Food Hall is open Tuesday through Sunday and general hours are breakfast 8-11 a.m., lunch 11 a.m.-4 p.m., happy hour 4-7 p.m., dinner 4-10 p.m., and brunch 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday only.
