Rawk’n Grub is coming to Midtown, and it’s going to be in a spot you might already know. On July 1, Steph Cook will take over the kitchen at Growlers, primarily a live music hall at 1911 Poplar owned by Tony Westmoreland and an out-of-town partner.
“This is what Rawk’n Grub was conceived as, food for a live music venue, and if I can’t have my own, I couldn’t ask for a better one,” Cook said. “Tony has all kinds of great acts in there.”
Westmoreland is a partner in Interim Restaurant & Bar and Tandem Restaurant Partners. He opened Growlers in 2017 and had a more robust kitchen at the beginning, but has since gone through several cooks who were also operating food trucks.
Cook, who owns Rawk’n Grub in the Citgo gas station at Summer and Highland, will split his time between the two spots but says he will primarily be at Growlers.
“I have a great crew at Citgo and they know what to do, so I don’t have to worry about them,” he said. “I know I’ll be at Growlers a lot at first, but will mostly be there anyway.”
Cook opened Memphis Mojo in Bartlett with a partner in 2013, left and opened the Rawk’n Grub food truck in 2015. It quickly developed a fan base for its over-the-top burgers with music-centric names. Last year, Cook found space in the gas station and has been there since.
Growlers is open only at night now, but plans are for it to open at lunch for food and drinks, though not music.
“Tony told me he’d do whatever I need to make it successful. We’ll have signage and will even open for lunch down the road,” Cook said.

Westmoreland said he’s looking forward to having someone back in the kitchen who can fully concentrate on Growlers.
“We had good people in there, but they had their own things going on,” he said. “We decided we just wanted to build the kitchen back up and do it with Steph.”
Growlers has a full bar, 24 beers on tap and a wide range of live acts.
“We have all kinds of things going on here,” Westmoreland said. “It’s as diverse as Midtown.”
The Rawk’n Grub menu, which is large and includes signature items such as the Patti La Mellte, Tom Patty and Swiss You Were Here burgers, will be offered in full.
“We won’t pare anything down,” Cook said. “We’re going to have it all and even more, because we’ll have a bar menu that we’ll offer for late night.”
