Daily Jigsaw: Sultana disaster

The old school gymnasium in Marion, Arkansas still has its hardwood court with the lines marking center court. But the goals are gone along with the bleachers.

The brick building’s exterior on Military Road already bills it as the Sultana Disaster Museum — dedicated to the April 1865 riverboat explosion that killed an estimated 1,800 people. Most of the casualties were Union soldiers who had just been released from Confederate prison camps in Cahaba, Alabama and Andersonville, Georgia at the end of the Civil War.

One of the steamboat’s boilers exploded on the river seven miles north of Memphis after an overnight stop in Memphis and then a trip across the river to West Memphis to load up on fuel for the trip up river.
