Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school girls basketball player of the week.
And we still need your help.
Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.
Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.
Here are the candidates for Week 1, which includes games played between Nov. 17 and Nov. 29.
Bella Rose Austin, Harding: Athletic genes run in the Austin family; Bella Rose’s older brother is former Harding and University of Memphis and current Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Calvin Austin. Bella Rose will continue making her own name with performances like the one against Trezevant on Nov. 21; she finished with 22 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and five steals in a 56-21 victory.
Fran Kelly, Collierville: Last year’s Daily Memphian Player of the Year, Miss Basketball winner and Mississippi Player of the Year has made an immediate impact on her new team after transferring from Hernando. Her best game so far was on Nov. 18 as she sank eight 3-pointers and scored 32 points in a 67-27 victory over a Middle College team that advanced to last year’s Class 1A state tournament.
La’Niyah Moore, Whitehaven: The Tigers are off to a 7-0 start under first-year coach Herbert Payne, thanks in large part to the efforts of Moore. She had an outstanding game against White Station Saturday in the championship of the MLK Tournament, finishing with 16 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks as the Tigers won, 50-47.
Caidyn Sanders, Houston: Last season’s Daily Memphian Freshman of the Year has sparked first-year coach Kevin Caraway’s Mustangs to a 5-2 start. Sanders scored 24 points in a 69-34 victory over MHEA on Nov. 20 and went for 23 two days later as Houston held off East, 59-55.
Curnesha Taylor, Memphis Business Academy: If it seems like Taylor has been around forever, well, she kind of has. A valuable contributor since her eighth-grade year, Taylor’s senior campaign is off to a strong start. She finished with 21 points and seven rebounds in a 50-48 victory over Briarcrest on Nov. 25, then tallied 22 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 47-37 victory over Kirby the next day.
