Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school boys basketball player of the week.
And we still need your help.
Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.
Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.
Here are the candidates for Week 2, which includes games played through Dec. 6.
Justin Frison, Houston: The Mustangs’ junior is looking every bit like one of the state’s top guards in the early going. Frison scored 20 points in a 70-45 victory over Melissa (Texas) before tallying 19 as Houston improved to 5-2 with a 52-47 victory over a good St. George’s team.
Jerrell Miller, Booker T. Washington: After helping lead Hillcrest to the Class 1A state championship game last season, Miller has transferred to BTW — and made the Warriors possible contenders. The 6-foot-5 senior scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds on Dec. 5 as BTW defeated Cordova, 59-44.
Greg Spight, Briarcrest: After missing much of last season with a foot injury, the Saints’ junior point guard turned in two strong performances on a weekend trip to Kentucky. Spight scored 19 points and handed out four assists in a 76-57 victory over Allen (Ky.) Wesley Christian and then put up 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as Briarcrest moved to 8-0 with a 78-53 win over Albuquerque Prep.
R.J. Tate, Arlington: Tate went 8-of-10 from the floor and made all six of his free-throw attempts to finish with 23 points as the Tigers continued their impressive start to the season with a 73-68 win over Jackson Southside at the Iverson Classic in Jackson.
Ronald Towns, Southwind: After missing the first couple of weeks due to injury, Towns returned with a vengeance last week. After scoring 18 in a win over Ridgeway, he went 10-of-15 from the floor (5-of-6 on 3-pointers) to finish with 29 points as the Jaguars bested Lift For Life Academy, 72-54, as part of the Iverson Classic.
