In the late 1990s when Kennison Kyle worked as a Santa Claus at Kmart, a little wide-eyed blond boy came and sat in his lap.

What would you like for Christmas? Kyle asked.

Santa, he said, I don’t want mommy and daddy to divorce.

Kyle was shocked. He was a 29-year-old wearing a cheap fake beard, and he’d only been portraying Santa for a year. He had no idea how to respond. Time seemed to stop. Gotta say something, gotta say something, gotta say something, he said he thought.

There’s some things Santa’s magic can’t do, the Kmart Santa said finally. Hopefully you can tell Mommy and Daddy that you want them to stay together, and they can find help to work through things. Mommy and Daddy both love you, and it’s not about you. It’s about problems they have with each other.

The boy thanked him, but the conversation distressed Kyle. He nearly quit being a Santa.
