Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school girls basketball player of the week.
And we still need your help.
Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.
Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.
Here are the candidates for this week, which includes games played over the Christmas break.
Fallon Drzyzga, St. Agnes: The senior tallied 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in her team’s 54-53 win over Lausanne on Dec. 20. But that’s just part of the story. Drzyzga missed two free throws with 12.7 seconds left. Then after the Lynx made one to take a one-point lead, she redeemed herself by hitting the game-winner with less than a second on the clock.
Ava Jones, Hutchison: Jones is putting together an impressive senior season for the Sting, one that will likely see her push for all-state mention and perhaps even Miss Basketball consideration. She tallied 33 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals in a 58-50 victory over East Nashville in the Music City Hoopfest.
Danae Kennedy, Collierville: The Dragons picked up a good win in the Tangle on the Trails event in Pontotoc, Miss. on Jan. 3, downing Tupelo, 63-60. Kennedy was named player of the game and finished with 22 points and six rebounds.
Kallie Marsh, Houston: A talented 6-foot-1 sophomore post player, Marsh transferred to Houston from Arlington in the offseason. She came back to haunt her former school on Dec. 19, scoring 29 points to lead the Mustangs to a 69-58 victory.
Brynne Miller, Harding: Miller continued her strong all-around play against Mitchell on Dec. 22. She finished with 18 points, six rebounds and nine steals as the Lions rolled to a 49-27 victory.
