Vote for the high school boys basketball player of the week, Week 5

By , Daily Memphian Updated: January 12, 2026 7:38 AM CT | Published: January 12, 2026 7:38 AM CT

Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school boys basketball player of the week.

And we still need your help.

Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.

Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.

Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.

Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.

Here are the candidates for this week, which includes games played through Jan. 10.

Larry Benson, Memphis Business Academy: An all-state performer as a junior in 2025, Benson scored 24 points on Jan. 9 to lead the Executives to an important 67-65 victory over district rival East.

R.J. Tate, Arlington: Tate, a junior, surpassed 1,000 career points earlier in the season and added to his total with a standout performance against Munford on Jan. 9. He scored 22 while adding five rebounds and four assists in a 68-55 victory.

Kylon Terry, Fayette-Ware: One of the state’s top sophomores, Terry led the Wildcats to three victories last week. He had 26 points, eight rebounds and five steals in an 85-64 win over Bolton before following with 11 points, eight boards and five assists in a 66-36 win over Millington. Terry then capped off a great week with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and five steals as Fayette-Ware improved to 13-3 with an 84-45 victory over Middleton.

Braylon Williams, Bartlett: Williams poured in 32 points on Jan. 6 as the Panthers rallied from a double-digit, first-half deficit to defeat Houston, 78-76, in overtime. The sophomore’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer sent the game into OT and he then scored the Bartlett’s first six points of the extra session.

C.J. York, Bluff City: York had the rarest of feats against KIPP on Jan. 7. He finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals to lead the Wolves to a 74-71 victory. The rebounding total is perhaps most impressive considering York stands just 5–foot-8.
