Could Bartlett get rid of its property tax?

By , Special to The Daily Memphian Published: February 02, 2026 4:00 AM CT

Bartlett Alderman David Reaves would like to see an end to property tax in his suburb; an approach once a staple in the founding of Lakeland, but not tried anywhere else locally in recent memory.

Reaves brought up the topic at the end of a Bartlett Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting last month, saying he would like to study the option’s feasibility in 2026.

“I never have been a big fan of property tax just in general,” Reaves said. “I’m not a huge fan of the government being able to basically foreclose on your home if you don’t pay your taxes.”
