In 1978, when Westy’s owner Jake Schorr opened his first restaurant in Downtown Memphis, he knew it needed to stay open late into the evenings and the wee hours of the morning. 

“You stayed open because people needed somewhere to go,” Schorr said. “It was about being available.”

Schorr was the first Downtown Memphis business operator in the 1970s to keep his doors open until 3 a.m., something Westy’s, his long-time Pinch District restaurant, is still known for.
