Lakeland shirks property tax rate hike: ‘We run a lot of things lean in this city’

By , Daily Memphian Published: May 22, 2026 1:14 PM CT

Lakeland residents and commercial property owners likely won’t pay more in property taxes next fiscal year, but their sewer rates are going to jump by 30% on July 1.

On Thursday, May 21, the city’s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved first reading on a $38.5 million general fund budget for fiscal year 2026-27 as well as a second and final reading to change the city’s sewer user rate.

The suburb’s property tax rate would remain at 94 cents per $100 in assessed value for the next fiscal year. That means the owner of a $450,000 property in Lakeland will pay $1,057.50 in city property taxes.
