Before I watched the documentary on Stax Records, I thought I knew a lot of the story about Stax, the Soulsville neighborhood and Memphis.

I was wrong. 

But in many important ways the documentary (“Stax: Soulsville USA”) brought forward details and perspectives about the record label’s rise and fall that even people very close to the story hadn’t ever heard.

How art, place and Memphis come together for the Hyde Foundation

I learned this even more clearly from Pat Mitchell Worley, the president and CEO of the Soulsville Foundation, who joined me on this week’s episode of “The Sidebar.” We talked about her experience watching the screening of the documentary with many of the people who made Stax possible. 

We also talked about the Stax Museum of American Soul, plus the Soulsville Charter School and Stax Music Academy, all of which are under the foundation’s umbrella.
