Daily Jigsaw: Rust Hall
When the Metal Museum opens at Rust Hall, it will blend a deep local history with plenty of new features and uses.
The Memphis Academy of Art, as the school was originally called, opened Rust Hall in 1959, 12 years before the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that blocked Interstate 40 from cutting through Overton Park.
Roy Harrover of Harrover & Mann designed the building. He also designed the Memphis International Airport, with its iconic martini glass facade, a few years later.
The Memphis College of Art’s last class graduated in 2020, and now, construction crews are putting the finishing touches on the historic building for its Sept. 5 reopening.
