Once again this season, The Daily Memphian is recognizing a high school football player of the week.
And we need you — our readers — to help.
Each Monday, we post several of the top performers from the previous week’s games. Readers can vote for their favorite until Thursday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m., at which point the winner will be announced.
Here are the candidates from Week 7.
Nate Brick, CBHS: No one who was at Tom Nix Stadium Friday would have left without being impressed by Brick, who completed 24 of 34 passes for 382 yards and four touchdowns in his team’s 29-28 loss to Briarcrest. The 382 yards are a school record — surpassing the 331 the sophomore had in a game earlier this season.
Elijah Cochran, Cordova: The Wolves won their first region game since 2023 — while at the same time taking a huge step toward securing a Class 6A playoff berth — with a 24-21 victory over Arlington. Cochran led the way; the senior carried 24 times for 223 yards and scored once.
J.D. Donaldson, Briarcrest: Top-ranked Briarcrest stayed unbeaten with its 29-28 victory over rival CBHS — but things were looking grim until Donaldson rode to the rescue with maybe the play of the season, a 67-yard catch-and-run with 1:14 left. Cayden Dixon’s ensuing two-point conversion pass to Kash Parker provided the winning margin.
Tavarco Jackson, Melrose: Jackson touched the ball only eight times against Douglass — but scored six touchdowns. The senior caught four passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns (59, 27, 38, 65) and rushed three times for 71 yards and two scores (27, 15). Additionally, he had a 43-yard punt return to account for 303 all-purpose yards in a 56-0 win.
Corrian Johnson, Fairley: Johnson was tremendous in the 55-7 win over Memphis Business Academy that kept Fairley unbeaten in Region 8-2A play. He completed 11 of 12 passes for 277 yards and four touchdowns (60, 17, 47, 19) while also rushing for 37 on four carries.
Dekacian Waters, Westwood: Waters was the hero as the Longhorns improved to 4-2 with a 32-26 victory over Bluff City, scoring the game-winner on a 30-yard run on third and 21 with 50 seconds left. Prior to that, he also scored on runs of 71 and 5 yards, returned a kick-off 71 yards for a touchdown and had a 93-yard pick-six. Waters finished with 312 all-purpose yards.
Khamoni Williams, Southwind: The Auburn commit only played the first quarter in his team’s 46-6 victory over Kirby — but what a quarter it was. Williams ran for 153 yard on just five carries with three touchdowns and caught a 14-yard pass for a fourth score as the Jaguars improved to 6-1.
