Bar Talk: Char

The drinks list at Char has always been divided by spirits and when the restaurant opened, this was simply the whiskey cocktail.

Time marches on and this excellent gem is no longer on the printed menu, but all you have to do is request the original by name and you can have your own.

Sip it and if you get hungry, place an order for the best crab cakes in town.

The O.G.



1 ½ ounces rye

½ ounce Meletti amaro (see note)

½ ounce Cynar

½ ounce honey syrup (dissolve honey in hot water at 1:1 ratio; cool before using)

½ ounce lemon juice

Lemon twist


Pour all ingredients except lemon twist in a bar glass, top with ice and stir. Pour in coupe glass, twist lemon over glass to release oil and use as garnish. Note: Averno amaro can stand in for the Meletti.
