The race for the District 2 Memphis City Council seat will advance to a runoff after no single candidate emerged with a majority of the vote.
Results are in for all races in the Memphis municipal election Oct. 5, 2023, including vote totals for Memphis mayor, Memphis City Council districts 1-7 and all three positions of Memphis City Council super districts 8 and 9.
Van Turner conceded his run for Memphis mayor just past 10 p.m. Thursday night, Oct. 5.
As of 8:35 p.m., 10 of 98 precincts were reporting along with the early and absentee vote. Combined, Young had 28% to Floyd Bonner Jr.’s 23%.
Shortly before 3:30 p.m., Second Baptist Church on Walnut Grove said about 405 people had voted.
The move is in response to a 2021 Tennessee law requiring local districts to close if their schools are used as polling locations.
In total, 76 members of the Memphis football team are registered to vote, and many already have filed ballots.
Historically, I’m an Election Day voter. This year, I’m planning to break precedent. We’re in a pandemic. Everything’s a little unsettled. Well, everything except my personal ballot, which will be short on truly contested races and even shorter on indecision.
