The Memphis-based company’s announcement of the closing in South Carolina is in addition to previous layoff announcements.
One closing is in Cleveland, Tennessee, part of what a Truist Securities analyst calls a process of “strategic, commercial and cultural reset.”
In all, the company is cutting 650 jobs, 400 of them in Memphis, its headquarters.
In April, International Paper said it had reached an agreement to acquire DS Smith and expected to close the deal by the fourth quarter.
According to one analyst, it may make more sense for IP to explore selling its fluff pulp business to Suzano instead of the entire company.
“Combining with DS Smith is a logical next step in IP’s strategy to drive profitable growth by strengthening our global packaging business,” said International Paper CEO Mark S. Sutton.

Memphis-based International Paper plans to permanently close its containerboard mill in Orange, Texas, and cease operations at two of its pulp machines.
IP announced Wednesday, Sept. 6, a request from its chairman and CEO Mark Sutton to the company’s board of directors to begin looking for his successor.
A mini-tender offer is an offer made to buy a company’s shares directly from its current investors, usually in an amount less than 5% of issued stock.
International Paper’s adjusted operating earnings were $185 million in the quarter compared to $195 million during the same period last year.
When IP’s shareholders meet in May for its annual meeting, they will be asked to reappoint all 11 of the board members.
IP disclosed how much its executives earned in 2022, including its CEO Mark Sutton, who earned more than $13 million last year through a combination of salary, stocks and incentives.
