With concessions curated by the chefs at Kinfolk, Hard Times Deli and Comeback Coffee, photo installations and a 40-foot screen, there’s a new club in town, and it’s all about bringing the community to the movies.
In a lengthy hearing late Friday afternoon, Chancellor Melanie Taylor Jefferson declined to dismiss a long-running lawsuit waged by a Chickasaw Gardens resident against the Pink Palace Museum and the City of Memphis.
A resident who lives near the Pink Palace is suing the museum, saying that its outdoor parties and events are too loud and that a historic schoolhouse on the property violates zoning ordinances.
The 2021 decision to rebrand to the Memphis Museums of Science & History was met with some blowback from longtime citizens. Now, Memphis Museums Inc. leaders are trying to manage confusion about its brand and locations.
“We really tried to focus on celebrating Memphis music in all its different genres, from blues to soul to rock and roll to punk.”
Kevin joined Eric Barnes on The Sidebar to talk about how MoSH – which includes The Pink Palace, the Lichterman Nature Center and other facilities – weathered COVID as well as new developments at the museum.
“There are some things I want. I’ve wanted them for a while and the hints just aren’t working. So, I’ve made a modest list — 10 things you can choose from.”
It seems that the people managing the museums want to call themselves something other than the Pink Palace. But we “the locals” will never call the Pink Palace anything else. Even with a primer to explain whatever a MoSH is.
Guests will be “highly encouraged” to wear masks and required to undergo temperature screenings when entering.
Within a week of the city order to close because of the coronavirus, lesson-hungry homebound families were able to access Museum To Go, a sampler of Pink Palace artifacts, activities and movies. Kevin Thompson mobilized his gloved-and-masked education team to make museum content available in record time.
