A majority of Shelby County residents want to build a new jail and think the Memphis Safe Task Force has been a success. But the majority also thinks the Task Force’s widespread immigration-related arrests have not made Memphis safer.

The forum will address juvenile crime, bail, truancy and other factors with speakers including representatives from the Memphis Police Department, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, General Sessions Court and the school system.
In two closely watched categories, Memphis saw a 2.6% drop in its major violent crime rate and a 20.3% decline in its major property crime rate from January to September, according to the Crime Commission.
“While we all welcome the good news that crime has continued its downward turn for the third straight quarter, we cannot lose sight of the fact that the percentages reflect real people.”
“Reported violent crime, reported property crime and overall crime is down,” Bill Gibbons, president of the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission, said. “I don’t think most people feel it yet, and the way people feel is very, very important.”
Major violent crime was down 5.1% in Memphis and 5% in Shelby County for 2022 compared to the year prior. But major property crime — mainly driven by more than a 100% increase in vehicle thefts — is up. Related story:
