The winners of the three races make a majority of seven women on the city council that takes office in January — the first majority of women on the 13-member body in the 55-year history of the mayor-council form of government.
Walker and Kirkwood will battle for the Memphis City Council district that covers Whitehaven and parts of Parkway Village, Oakhaven and Hickory Hill.
The lawsuits over the five-year residency rule in the mayor’s race get their first court hearing Friday. Meanwhile, four of the mayoral contenders show up for a People’s Convention gathering at LeMoyne-Owen College and council candidates Meggan Kiel and Pearl Walker kick off their bids.
“I pray that all of us can live in the moment and that we can get some of the best moments we can out of life” in 2023, host Eric Brinson said.
“That tree is a part of the experience. It’s one of those good old fashioned family experiences that you can have.”
The community advocate and former journalist was shot to death Saturday night in Raleigh.
