The Shelby County Health Department reported 259 new coronavirus cases Thursday, July 22. One month ago, the agency reported 14 new cases. Majority are Delta variant.
From Nov. 28 to Saturday, Dec. 12, the Health Department reported an average of 501 coronavirus cases and 4,493 test results a day with a 11.2% positivity rate.
From Sept. 12 to Saturday, Shelby County recorded an average of 154 new coronavirus cases a day. In the preceding two weeks, the county averaged 116 new cases a day.
Weekly averages tone down bumps that show up when tests come from a high-impact area or are delayed in being processed and are reported all at once.
Shelby County’s overall positivity rate surpassed 10% this week. A concerning number local health experts wanted to avoid on a daily basis, much less for the overall rate.
During that span, Shelby County recorded its four highest single-day increases in new cases and exceeded a 10% daily positivity rate in 10 of the past 14 days.
From June 3 to Wednesday, Shelby County averaged 131 new cases and 1,558 tests results a day with an 8.4% positive rate. Five of the six highest single-day totals of new coronavirus cases in Shelby County occurred in the past two weeks.
The primary metric that was supposed to guide our decisions isn’t moving in the right direction. It wasn’t telling us what we wanted to hear, so it appears as if we’re choosing to ignore it.
The latest COVID-19 data is consistent with the trend the pandemic is stabilizing in Shelby County.
