The cases represent 15% of the felonies that have come through the DA’s office this year, Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said during a Wednesday press conference.
The “From Numbers to Narratives: Exploring Prosecution & Safety in Shelby County” data walk on Wednesday, March 13, was the culmination of a year-long partnership between Vera Institute and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and other local organizations.

“I think the consistent message from all of us and several others … is that we all recognize that we have a serious crime problem,” DA Mulroy said.
Hagerman has worked as the chief prosecutor for multiple high-profile cases, including the killings of Memphis rapper Young Dolph and school teacher Eliza Fletcher.
“In Tennessee, those ages 18-20 can carry a handgun without a permit, and without fear of prosecution from the state attorney general’s office or citation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol,” reads an email to ADAs from Ernest Brooks II, associate deputy district attorney and senior policy adviser in the DA’s office.
