Legal online sportsbooks could be accepting bets in the state as soon as next week.
Tennessee passed legislation to allow legal sports betting in an online-only format in May of 2019, but has yet to roll out platforms to make sports betting available to the public. This is a head-scratcher considering the state has an easy slam dunk opportunity to recoup some of the year’s lost revenue with very little effort.
And if the lottery board were less greedy, the state would actually make more money.
The good news for Tennesseans who want to bet legally on sports within the state’s borders is that, assuming the spring professional leagues reboot by late summer and college and pro football kick off this fall, the gambling apps really should be open in time.
The coronavirus has shut down most of the sports world and, as a consequence, sports books at Southland Casino and Racing and in Tunica are in for huge decreases in sports gaming revenue.
The Legislature made the decision — unique among all the states in the country — that sports betting will be an online-only activity. Tennesseans and tourists won’t need to go anywhere in particular to gamble. They’ll just need their phones.
