For more than two decades, the record label has developed artists, produced songs and released dozens of records. But the sale will allow it to work with a broader base of artists.

The Temptations come to Memphis — in the form of a Tony Award-winning musical. The tour brings home Jalen Harris, who portrays Eddie Kendricks in the Broadway show.

A trumpeter will take the stage at Graceland, New Edition is bringing its New Jack Swing flare to the FedExForum and the Orpheum Theatre will host the soulful Patti LaBelle. Plus, a Georgia-based country-rock band will make an appearance at Hernando’s Hide-A-Way. 

It never looks great on paper, but you can always be guaranteed that great stuff will happen. Like a magisterial Jill Scott cracking jokes and dispensing love advice, Sturgill Simpson surprising with a lacerating, hard country-soul set or that time that a nervy Randy Newman surveyed the afternoon crowd and began playing an unedited version of “Rednecks.”

Scheduled performers include Earth, Wind & Fire, The Roots, The Lumineers, GloRilla, Jazmine Sullivan, and PJ Morton.

Jazz Month at Crosstown Arts includes more than 40 jazz musicians and band performances, many of which are free.

This week, the Memphis Botanic Garden pairs Phillip Ashley Chocolates with whiskey, and Old Dominick pairs whiskey with the Super Bowl. Plus, Don Bryant and The Bo-Keys play the Halloran.

The concert, put on by the Iris Collective, features the work of Black and Chinese composers.

The University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music hosted its first Honey Music Festival on Sunday, Feb. 5. 

Student musicians backed the legendary singer at the grand opening gala for the Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center at the University of Memphis.

At one time, Stax founder Jim Stewart had musicians such as Otis Redding and Janis Joplin over to his house. He hasn’t always gotten a lot of fanfare himself, but that was part of his M.O. 

“Dispensing with the traditional orchestral introduction is as effective here as it was when the groundbreaking concerto was composed. The performance brought some much-needed beauty into this world.”

Coming to a stage near you this month: a legendary pop sensation, a world-renowned composer and a viral country star. 

“We want everyone to feel a piece of Shell magic in their community,” said the Shell’s executive director. “The Shell is a bright spot in Memphis, and everyone should have this joy that we have here.”

A Christian music festival in Olive Branch this June is expected to draw thousands of spectators with an unnamed top performer as headliner.
