The NIH grant will provide services for pregnant women trying to overcome substance abuse addiction. The director of Serenity Recovery Centers says she hopes it can end the practice of incarcerated women with such issues giving birth in prison and immediately losing custody of newborns.

The program will award grants to expand patient capacity, upgrade practices and technology, and improve access to health care services. 

Baptist Arlington Emergency Department — West Tennessee’s first freestanding emergency department — will increase access to health care for residents of northeast Shelby, Fayette, Tipton and Haywood counties while providing new jobs for local residents. 

As the hospital’s six-year, multi-billion dollar expansion gets underway, 500 office employees have moved into 150 Peabody Place. And area shops and restaurants are mighty glad to see them.

“There were so many of my friends that didn’t have their fathers in their lives, at least not in the way they wanted them to be. He filled that role for so many people,” said Paul Young, president and CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission.

The largest comprehensive behavioral health provider in Shelby County plans to break ground in March on the 55,000-square-foot crisis center.

“We were in Benghazi when the civil war started,” the surgeon said by video teleconference from the hospital in Basra, Iraq. “We were in Iraq when ISIS was invading. We were in Tripoli when the government of Eastern Libya decided they were going to fight the government of Western Libya.”

Flu season typically peaks from December to February but Memphis-area emergency rooms are already treating an unusually large number of influenza patients. 

Officials said the grant is intended to reduce maternal and infant mortality, particularly among the county’s Black population.

Regional One responded to a resolution approved this week by the Memphis City Council that urges the Shelby County Commission to persuade the hospital to allow the intervention program’s counselors access to the hospital and victims of violent crime.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has joined The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to fight childhood cancer.
