St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s $13 billion campus expansion, the largest in its history, is progressing.

Several years after launching DPX, Brad Kilgore started Tissue Innovations, a tissue bank, with his brother Don Kilgore. Both Tissue Innovations and DPX operate out of a 15,000-square-foot space in Bartlett and employ about 15 people.

Over the next five years, the health department will use nearly $14 million in CDC funding to bolster its workforce and infrastructure. 

“The state has determined right now that it’s in the best interest of Tennesseans for the state to assume direct financial and managerial responsibility for these services,” Health Commissioner Ralph Alvarado told Tennessee lawmakers.

The evaluation is part of the Shelby County Health Department’s effort to gain national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board.

Marlo Thomas, St. Jude’s national outreach director and daughter of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas, was in Memphis to cut the ribbon at the commons, which will officially open on Feb. 7. 

The ambulances will be funded by nearly $1 million U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) secured through the congressional appropriations process. 

The Memphis Dental Society and Shelby County Dental Society are partnering to host Mid-South Mission of Mercy at Bellevue Baptist Church. 

Dr. Jason Vanatta has been named program director of the Methodist Transplant Institute in Memphis, which is known for broad success with liver, kidney and pancreas transplants. 

“The insurance company is really going to get out-flanked, from a PR standpoint, by the Methodist system. Who wants to see kids not get the health care they deserve?” Dr. John Rodney said.

The group hope the expansion in Arlington will draw more specialists to provide services to the growing northeast Shelby County community.

Conrad Pearson will stay in Germantown but not move to a site as it had planned.

Arkansas is the first state in the Southeast to allow qualified nurse practitioners practice independently, increasing access to health care in rural areas and alleviating pressure on Memphis area hospitals and clinics, which take in overflow. 

“As pediatricians, we face the reality that now many of our patients won’t have access to the specialized inpatient care and procedures only available at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.”

When complete, it’s expected to generate $4 million in wages for 70 employees.
