DMC’s ‘last resort’ in its toolkit is blight lawsuits

The eyesore at 82-88 S. Main St. is seen by thousands of people every day, and the Downtown Memphis Commission is fighting to change that.
Since 2022, the DMC has had an ongoing lawsuit with the blighted South Main property to encourage and help with progress.
The DMC does this through the anti-blight committee, which allows the DMC to file a lawsuit against the property itself, not the owner, in the Shelby County Environment Court under the Tennessee Neighborhood Preservation Act.
After a lawsuit is filed, the case will go to Shelby County Environmental Court under Judge Patrick Dandridge, who will classify the property as blighted if he sees it as such.
