A new game bar and speakeasy is set to open on South Main Street within the next few months.
“As you walk into the space, you’ll feel like you’re walking into a normal bar with ’70s-, ’80s-, and ’90s-themed decorations,” said owner Ryan Marsh.
The main floor of the building will be Level Up bar and restaurant, and the downstairs basement will be Secret Level Up speakeasy. Secret Level Up will likely open about six to nine months after Level Up opens.
Level Up bar and restaurant will feature a giant television, 14 feet by 8 feet; 11 additional TVs will be located throughout the space for sports and gaming options. There will also be board games available, 20 arcade games and an 8-foot Lite Brite board.
As long as guests are eating and drinking, board games will be free to play.
“For the arcade and retro game consoles, for a drink, you’ll get a token, and for food, you’ll get a token,” Marsh said. “You can play for free if you keep eating and drinking. If not, you can buy tokens.”
Patrons will also be able to play retro games such as Atari, Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64.
“Moving toward the back of the restaurant or bar, that’s when you’ll see two Skee-Ball machines,” he said. “We bought them from the old Local in Midtown and redesigned them to fit the ’80s theme.”
Marsh was drawn to the idea of an arcade bar more than a decade ago while traveling in the Northeast.
“I walked by and saw (a bar with arcade games), but the funny thing is, I forgot my ID, so they wouldn’t let me in,” Marsh said. “I only saw it from the outside looking in, and I thought I could do it better.”
Marsh also said that bar didn’t offer food, which he plans to have in Level Up.
“In Memphis, we’re known for food,” said Marsh. “We’re going to be in Downtown Memphis, so we’re 100% doing barbecue. I’m from Pennsylvania, and I’ve lived in Memphis 18 years, and I still haven’t had a true Philly living here.”
Marsh said he will be making an authentic Philly sandwich, the “first of its kind in Memphis” with rolls shipped in from Philadelphia. He’ll also have gourmet burgers with quality beef, smoked gouda, caramelized onions and bacon.
Secret Level Up will be a New York-style speakeasy with craft cocktails as well as live music and comedy shows.

Previously, Marsh was the general manager of the Moxy Memphis Downtown hotel as well as the Hu. Hotel; he has also managed restaurants for several years. Marsh’s business investors, Brian Leith and Adam Leith, are the main investors in Villa Castrioti.
“I have been researching Memphis for five years now, and I’ve been working on this concept for 10,” Marsh said. “I really dove into the analytics of Memphis four to five years ago. I was giving a hard look at East Memphis because of the traffic, but I wasn’t sold on that because my brand fits so many different age groups. Out East, the age group is so much higher and didn’t really incorporate the millennials and younger generation.
“South Main and Downtown are growing more than any other ZIP code in Memphis; it’s the safest ZIP code in Memphis and more young professionals are moving to South Main and Downtown than we have ever had before. For a new bar, it just makes sense.”
