Coronavirus: Death toll surpasses 700 in Shelby County

Shelby County Health Department reported 453 new cases of the novel coronavirus Sunday, Dec. 6.
The new cases came from 3,365 tests for a daily positivity rate of nearly 13.5% percent.
There have been 50,923 cases of the virus since early March. The Health Department estimates 46,788 people have recovered, and 3,433 people are currently battling the virus.
The Health Department also reported six new deaths. A total of 702 people have died with COVID-19 in Shelby County.
The most recent hospital data is from 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3. At that time 2,597 patients were in Memphis-area hospitals. While 92% of acute care beds were occupied, 17% of those patients were being treated for COVID-19.
There were 30 available intensive care unit beds. Of the 93% occupied ICU beds, 35% of patients had COVID-19.
The Tennessee Department of Health releases its daily report at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the state reported 397,522 cases since it was first reported in March. The state said 4,905 Tennesseans have died with the virus.
