Coronavirus: No Shelby County COVID-19 update after Nashville explosion

The Shelby County Health Department did not issue a COVID-19 daily update Saturday, Dec. 26, citing a “data outage” with its collection system connected to the explosion in Downtown Nashville Christmas morning.

New Shelby County coronavirus data will be included in Sunday’s update, according to an email from the Health Department.


Nashville explosion knocks communications offline


As of Friday, Dec. 25, the Health Department has reported 64,013 total coronavirus cases and 839 deaths, classifying 56,561 cases as inactive/recovered. Active cases in Shelby County stand at 6,613.

A total of 803,193 coronavirus tests have been performed in Shelby County, yielding an 9% positivity rate.

There were 567 COVID-19 patients in Memphis-area hospitals as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, 23, the latest data available, according to Tennessee’s Healthcare Resource Tracking System. The Health Department will provide information on hospital capacity from Thursday through Sunday in its Monday update.

The 567 pandemic-related admissions is a new high in the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the 557 people hospitalized, are 154 in intensive care unit beds, with 413 in acute care beds.

Hospital capacity for ICU beds is at 95% use, and acute care beds are at 92% occupancy.

Those who are COVID-positive or suspected of having the virus represent 39% of ICU patients and 22% of acute care patients.
