No new fatalities, 978 COVID-19 cases reported Sunday

The Shelby County Health Department reported 978 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, Jan. 3.
The total in Shelby County reaches 69,798 since early March.
Of the 5,904 reported tests Sunday, nearly 16.6% were positive.
The Health Department reported no additional deaths, and 914 people in Shelby County have died from the virus.
WEEKEND VACCINATION UPDATE The Shelby County Health Department is still vaccinating persons in priority groups 1a1. When there has been availability, we have also provided vaccine to funeral/mortuary workers and persons 75 and older, who fall in group 1a2. All appointments for Saturday and Sunday at our drive-thru vaccination locations have now been filled and none are available. Next week, the Health Department will begin offering vaccinations in congregate settings, including long-term care facilities, whose staff and residents are part of the 1a1 priority group. We will announce early next week when and where drive-thru vaccination will resume for 1a1 groups, funeral/mortuary workers, and the 75+ population. -- Shelby County Health Department, Saturday, Jan. 2
An estimated 61,650 patients have recovered and 7,234 of the cases are active.
Hospital capacity is reported on weekdays. The most recent data from the Health Department is from Thursday at 5 p.m.
At that time, 586 COVID-19 patients were being treated in area hospitals. Of those, 157 occupied intensive care units.
ICU capacity is at 95% and 24 beds were vacant, and 88% of acute care beds are occupied.
The Tennessee Department of Health releases its daily update at 2 p.m. Saturday it reported 8,550 new cases for a total of 604,132 since early March. There have been 6,970 fatalities related to the virus in Tennessee.
The state also reported 126,887 coronavirus vaccines were administered by Jan. 1, and 1.17% of Shelby County residents have received their first of two vaccine doses. The state plans to update its vaccination data on Tuesdays and Fridays.
