Coronavirus cases in Shelby County exceed 80,000

Shelby County Health Department reported 428 new cases of coronavirus Sunday, Jan. 24, and the total since early March is now 80,353.
An estimated 74,210 of those have recovered.
A total of 924,731 COVID-19 tests have been administered in Shelby County. Of those, 4,739 were reported Sunday morning bringing the daily positivity rate to slightly more than 9%.
The Health Department reported five additional deaths. A total of 1,187 people in Shelby County have died from the virus.
The Health Department releases hospital capacity updates on weekdays. As of 5 p.m. Thursday, 490 people were being treated for COVID-19 in area hospitals, and 145 occupied intensive care units. About 94% of staffed ICU beds are occupied and 26 are available.
Saturday, Shelby County reported 30,386 people had received one dose of a vaccine and 9,099 had received both. Vaccination updates will be released once a week.
The Tennessee Department of Health reported 2,841 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday for a total of 708,717 cases since the virus was first reported in the state.
While 654,335 people have recovered in the state, 8,859 people who had the virus died. There were 40 new deaths reported Sunday afternoon.
