Daily Memphian’s 2023 reader lunch series starts at Dim Sum King

For our January Friday reader lunch, we have something a little different: We’re going to Dim Sum King on Jan. 20, where we’ll be served a selection of dim sum and authentic Chinese dishes.
Here’s the menu, which might get a tweak here and there before the actual day, but will be substantially the same:
For our dim sum selections, we’ll have sui mei, shrimp dumplings, cilantro dried scallop dumplings, pot stickers and XO noodles.
After that, there’s plenty more: Mapo tofu, Peking duck, tong cho chicken, young chow fried rice and a dessert platter. A soft drink is included; for this lunch, the all-inclusive price is $25 for subscribers and $30 for non-subscribers. That price includes tax and tip.
Everything will be served family style, and we’ll eat at tables of 10, so if you’ve pondered coming alone and weren’t sure, now is a great time to join us: Almost everyone will be seated with strangers who can become new friends.
You can also bring your own wine, as the restaurant doesn’t serve any. (And that means bring your own wine glass too, unless you want to drink wine from a soda glass.) We’ll eat starting at noon and we won’t officially have an early mingle as there is no bar, but feel free to arrive any time after 11:30 a.m. If you want to make it bubbly instead, that’s fine, too — it’s the weekend of the Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, which is Jan. 22.
(It’s the year of the rabbit, if you’re curious.)
Here’s the link to purchase your ticket, which is live at noon Jan. 4.
At this lunch, you’ll mostly eat and socialize — you’re there to have a good time — but we’ll also have someone available to explain the dishes and talk about the history of dim sum.
Looking forward to seeing you Friday, Jan. 20, at Dim Sum King, 5266 Summer Ave.
