Germantown Parkway eats, Liquor Store and more

On this week’s Sound Bites, digital director Holly Whitfield and I talk about some food stories we’ve each recently written and one recent Memphis food event we both missed.

A couple of weeks ago, I published a selective guide to restaurants and other food haunts along Germantown Parkway, Memphis’ suburban superhighway. We talk about a couple of Whitfield’s favorites from that list, and a couple she hasn’t gotten to yet.

Table Talk: Memphis Made, Central go whole hog; Second Line’s Oktoberfest

Whitfield explored the menu at Liquor Store East, the latest restaurant at a particularly hoppin’ corner of the Poplar Corridor. We talk about how the Liquor Store is giving East Memphis a much-needed local coffee-shop option, how they do right by meatloaf and how they’re bringing one particular Memphis dish to a potential new audience.

Then, finally, we discuss the double-edged success of the recent Asian Night Market at Crosstown, a classic example of the “nobody went because it was too popular” paradox, and what it promises for the potential growth of the Asian food scene in Memphis.

Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.
