Memphis’ oldest family-run restaurant is throwing itself a birthday party on Saturday and to celebrate its 100 years in business, you get to buy meals for 100 cents at The Arcade.

“We wanted to go back to the 1919 menu and charge the original prices, but we couldn’t find one and came up with this idea instead,” said Kelcie Zepatos, who nows runs the South Main restaurant with her husband, Jeffery Zepatos.

In 1919, Greek immigrant Speros Zepatos opened the restaurant where it stands today, at the corner of G.E. Patterson and South Main. It’s been run by his descendants for most of its 100 years, though it was twice owned by non-family members.

In 1925, Speros Zepatos tore down the small wood building and built The Arcade, which housed the restaurant and retail shops. In the 1950s, Harry Zepatos renovated it and turned it into the diner we know today.

Over the years, Elvis and Justin Timberlake have eaten there, and it’s been featured in numerous movies filmed in Memphis, including “Great Balls of Fire,” “The Firm,” “Mystery Train” and “The Client.”

The Little Tea Shop, which opened in 1918, is one year older than The Arcade.

On Saturday, the block party starts at 7 a.m. with breakfast, and kicks into high gear at 11 a.m., when live music starts. The area around the restaurant will be closed to traffic, and beer will be sold until 9 p.m., when the party ends. The 100-cents menu will include restaurant favorites such as the sweet potato pancakes, cheeseburgers and the peanut butter and banana sandwich.

Music will go on all day, and Free World is the 7 p.m. headliner. You can buy drinks at the bar inside the restaurant, which will feature drinks at regular prices and happy hour specials.

Want to pay more for your meal or your drinks? Have at it. All the money is going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“We wanted to give back to the city that’s been good to our family for so many years, and who is doing more good than St. Jude?” Kelcie Zepatos said.
