Coronavirus: Week of 200+ new daily cases continues

For the sixth consecutive day, the Shelby County Health Department reported more than 200 new coronavirus cases.

The agency reported 208 new coronavirus cases and four new related deaths on Friday, Oct. 23.

The 208 new cases come from 2,235 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 9.3%.

In Shelby County, 524,230 coronavirus tests have been performed; 306,845 individuals have been tested for coronavirus. The numbers differ because some people have been tested multiple times. About 12% of people who have been tested for coronavirus in Shelby County have had a positive result; about 8% of all coronavirus tests in Shelby County have had positive results.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 35,487 cases, including 32,653 recoveries, 2,274 active cases and 560 deaths.

There were 250 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Thursday, per state data; 80 were in intensive care units.

According to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System, 90% of area ICU and 87% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 21% of area ICU patients were either COVID-positive (80) or suspected of having the coronavirus (1). About 9% of area acute care patients were either COVID-positive (170) or suspected of having the virus (19). 

In our area, 41 ICU and 280 acute care beds were available.

The Tennessee Department of Health reports statewide coronavirus statistics at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Thursday, the agency reported 237,907 coronavirus cases, including 3,011 deaths, 1,300 current hospitalizations and 212,555 recoveries.

About 3.4 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
