Local pediatrician Dr. Daniel Chatham is running for a seat on Germantown’s Board of Education.

Chatham picked up a petition for the Position 2 seat, held by Betsy Landers, July 14, according to the Shelby County Election Commission website.

Landers is also running, seeking a second four-year term.

Candidates have until noon Aug. 18 to submit petitions with sufficient signatures for the Nov. 8 election. They have until noon Aug. 25 to withdraw.

Election season begins for Shelby County suburbs

Chatham and his wife, Allie, have three elementary-age sons in the Germantown Municipal School District.

“Like many of our friends and neighbors, we decided to raise our boys in Germantown so they could attend one of Tennessee’s top school districts with the best group of teachers you’ll find anywhere,” he said.

Chatham, from Dyersburg, previously considered running for the Shelby County Commission before redistricting drew his home into the same district as incumbent Brandon Morrison.

“I’ve been praying and seeking an opportunity to serve our community for the last several years, and Allie and I were thrilled when this opportunity became available,” Chatham said of the school board race.

More candidates enter races in four suburban cities

He said he talked to friends and local leaders before deciding to run.

“This is a young district, having only been formed in 2013. I’m excited to continue the good work that’s launched GMSD to the top, while also clear-eyed about parents’ concerns over both pandemic restrictions and transparency in their kids’ curriculum,” he said.

Chatham moved to Memphis in 2011 for medical school and completed his residency at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital before joining Pediatrics East. He and his wife met serving in their church’s children’s ministry. Chatham is the son of a teacher and his wife is a former teacher.

The Chathams are members of Harvest Church in Germantown. He is on the board of Agape Child and Family Services and part of the executive committee for the Republican Party of Shelby County.
