The former Memphis police officer has faced “brutal” jail conditions while in federal custody, according to a filing by his attorneys.

A Memphis rape kit from 1997 links to an assault in Dyersburg, Tennessee, plus the 1991 murder of four girls at an Austin, Texas, yogurt shop.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Memphis Police Department officers responding to a report of gunfire in the Parkway Village area shot a man Saturday.

The woman accused of attempting to sell Graceland in a fraudulent auction last year will now spend more than four years in federal prison for her crimes.

“I’m absolutely befuddled why the city government, why the county government and why the state of Tennessee would give money to a person to run a nonprofit organization when they had been convicted of stealing money from a nonprofit organization in the past,” said Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee.

DeAndre Brown and Vinessa Brown remain in custody following a bond hearing Friday, Sept. 19, that will carry into next week.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young said the National Guard will not be doing any detainment. 

The Tennessee Supreme Court had initially stayed the ruling while the case worked its way through the appellate court.

The City Council could vote on the resolution, so far backed by a group of council members, at its meeting next week. It is not binding on Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

In the wake of Tyré Nichols’ death, the Memphis Police Department decided it had an absence of supervision in the field, and set out to fix that problem by creating a new position — the second lieutenant. But that solution caused a string of other problems. 

The state National Guard is also being sent to Memphis, although exactly what its job will be and where they will be deployed remain some of the biggest unanswered questions.

Gov. Bill Lee described the Memphis Safe Task Force as a “long-time” mission that could last six months or longer.

The Tops location, which suffered another fire in February, had been within four weeks of reopening after a major reconstruction. 

A former FedEx board member suggested President Donald Trump send the National Guard to Memphis.

“If (Trump) will say ... after the National Guard leaves and tells the world that Memphis is the safest city in the world, Donald come on,” U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen said Friday.

A new federal racketeering indictment unsealed Thursday in Memphis federal accuses six alleged Ghost Mob gang members of conspiracy to murder and attempted murder in the aid of racketeering for a 2020 incident firefight with a rival gang.

“What we need most are financial resources for intervention and prevention, additional patrol officers, and case support to strengthen MPD’s investigations,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said.

Authorities were conducting a predawn drug investigation when the suspect was killed and an officer wounded. The officer is in non-critical condition.

The Memphis Police Department reported in July crime was down 20% overall compared to the same point in 2024. At the time, other major cities were also seeing declines.

Four children were shot in a shooting late Sunday night in the Hickory Hill area of Memphis.
