Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.

Adrian Garcia was putting up Christmas decorations at Crosstown Concourse when he heard the troubling news.

“We were getting ready to turn on the Christmas tree that night,” he said.

Garcia, who leads the maintenance department at Crosstown, came to the United States from El Salvador 17 years ago.

“He’s a take-charge guy,” said Tom Cowens, the operations manager for the building. “We’re lucky to have him as part of our community.”
