901 FC heads to San Antonio looking to extend unbeaten run
As Memphis 901 FC turned its attention to Saturday’s trip to San Antonio, Akeem Ward summed up the vibe on the training ground in one word.
“Intense to be honest,” the 28-year-old fullback said Thursday. “Everyone’s getting after each other and we’re not complacent, which is something that’s very good. In the past, we’ve won games and it’s (been) ‘okay, let’s sit and relax.’
“But everyone’s been intense and willing to work hard and I think that’s a good position to be in. We’re not complacent in the spot we’re at.”
Ward didn’t come right out and say it but the implication is clear: there’s really no need for Memphis to be complacent at this point in the season. True, the team’s recent five-match unbeaten streak has produced 13 valuable points and lifted them to fourth place in the USL Championship’s Western Division.
That’s promising of course and the team will look to build on it when they kick off at 8 p.m. against a slumping San Antonio side that has taken just five points from its last five. But the reality of the situation is that the recent run of good form has only gotten the club back to level terms after dropping five in a row between March 16 and April 20.
