Ja Morant is out for the season and Grizzlies fans are mourning a year that just keeps getting worse. As one Memphian put it, succinctly: “I give up.” 

Now that the meeting minutes are approved, the U of M Auxiliary Services Foundation will receive Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

The Grizzlies notched one of their best wins of the season without Morant on Sunday, before the team knew of his fate. Perhaps that will help them carry confidence into a “rest of the season” they now know will continue without him.

Daily Memphian Player of the Year Houston High’s Ellett Smith and three players from state champion ECS lead a strong local contingent on the All-State soccer team.

Morant will undergo season-ending surgery and is expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2024-25 season.

The Grizzlies star point guard was on the bench in a sling, but Jaren Jackson Jr., Vince Williams Jr., Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart lifted the team to come back win on the road.

Mills had averaged 7.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24.2 minutes through 14 games for Memphis. The fifth-year senior’s college career is over.

Memphis was flat out the gate against SMU but eventually turned things around before point guard Jahvon Quinerly played hero. Again.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said Morant woke up with a sore shoulder following the team’s win over the Lakers. 

While the Tigers took a late lead late, turnovers in the final minutes of the game plagued the Memphis offense.

The Tigers will have to regroup quickly after a rough couple days to take on an SMU basketball team that’s top 50 in KenPom and the NET.
