The Shelby County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Monday that would cap the amount of hotel-motel tax funding Memphis Tourism receives, according to a resolution handed out to the media Monday, March 18.

With renovation of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium about to begin in May, the Memphis Tigers have reason to celebrate. And they will soon have a new party plaza where they can do it.

“I think the big messages are we’re moving forward, which we’re obviously really excited about,” athletics director Laird Veatch said Monday morning. “No. 2, we have clarity on not only what we want to do, but how we think we can get there.”

State Sen. Brent Taylor told The Daily Memphian Monday morning that he is working on a bill allowing Shelby County to reallocate hotel-motel tax funding to cover the public financing gap for the Downtown Memphis arena’s renovations. 

Six Memphis Grizzlies have their college team playing in the NCAA Tournament this week.

“I decided to make a business decision for myself,” Pierre told The Daily Memphian. “I need to choose the right situation for me. So it was kinda really like a no-brainer for me.”

The University of Memphis informed NIT officials that it would decline a bid if one was offered.

“Memphis basketball was left out again on Selection Sunday. It better not happen next year. Not if Memphis basketball is going to continue to be a dominant force in this city — or if Penny Hardaway is going to continue as the head coach.”
