Johnsley Barbas, who originally committed to Memphis in June, announced through Twitter that he’s going to Houston. 

“Having Coach Brown as part of our program over the last year-and-a-half was very impactful on our student-athletes and me as a coach,” head coach Penny Hardaway said in a statement.

The contest with Auburn offers Memphis a chance to grab its first signature, NCAA Tournament-resume-boosting victory of the season.

Jack Pender, from CBHS, captured 58 percent of the vote for his performance in a victory over FACS on Dec. 2. Aaliyah Converse, from St. George’s, scored 40 points in the win against St. Agnes on Nov. 28.

Arkansas and Kansas had some contrasting fortunes in 2022, but both coaches say a chance to play in the city’s postseason game is a nice reward.

“I feel like we’re about to rally up some wins,” Dillon Brooks said on Monday night after the Grizzlies beat the Heat with seven players unavailable. 

The Grizzlies will have to hope that Bane makes it back in due time, that “almost” continues to be close enough, and that Morant, Brooks and Jackson can remain healthy to maintain that “almost.”
